Richard Wagner

Richard (Wilhelm) Wagner(1813-1883), German operatic composer, in Leipzig he had first composition lesson and composed sonatas and overtures, then entered Thomaskirche. Later he turned his attention to operas. He composed mainly dramatic operas: these operas are - Rienzi, Der Fliegende Hollander, Tannhauser, Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, Lohengrin, Tristan und Isolde, Der Ring des Nibelungen(Das Rheingold, Siegfried, Die Walkure, Gotterdammerung), and Parsifal.

one of the very first set of music stamps issued in 1889 at Altona, a local post office in Germany, other composers included in this set(Mozart, Beethoven), and Schiller(poet).

Scenes from "Der Ring der Nibelungen"(The Ring Cycle) - Das Rhinegold, Die Walkure, Siegfried, Gotterdammerung. The Ring is an allegory, and tells of struggle for power between the Nibelung dwarfs, the Giants, and the Gods.
